Breaking forty

I managed to slip under 40mins for the 10K today. My time 39:55. I'm pretty happy as it's a PB and that 40min mark is a bit of a milestone for distance runners one that has had my number for the last couple of years.

Although I'm pleased it is bitter sweet as I thought while I was running today that I won't be able to go much faster than this and I might be just about be at my peak, which was a little sad.

But on the way home I was thinking "sure I can do better" and I thought about several factors that would contribute to a faster time.

That's what's so great about this game, you can alway aim to do better and enjoy the struggle in the process.

Thanks for your continued support.

  1. Woohoo!!!! Huuuuuuuge congrats on the PB Scott. Sub 40 :-)))

So, how did you feel during the race? What were your splits?

PS I'm sure you can do better too.

  2. Congratulations Scott. That's a great milestone. Cross that one off.

Can you do better? Of course, but one thing at a time. For now, enjoy and take satisfaction from this goal and start to focus on your Next Big Thing, and we all know what that is.

  3. Nice one mate, great result.

Everyone can do better! Given that you are currently training for a marathon that is a great achievement and you should be very pleased with the outcome.

  5. Ummm....I have bad news for you, or perhaps you have already seen it in the Japan Times, but that program you saw about the natto diet has had to air a 5-minute apology for using "fabricated data and photos ... and intentionally distorted comments by a US university professor"

In other words, they lied about the natto diet and knew what they were doing. That's outrageous. So those of us who were skeptical were right to be so. If you haven't got the paper and want me to post up the salient points on my blog, let me know.

  6. Wow, that's fantastic Scott! I love hearing about PB's, it makes me aim for a PB as well (which shouldn't be hard - considering that I haven't done much and everything's a PB for me at the moment).

I also doubt that you can't go faster (unless you let your mind tell you that).

  9. That's great news Scott :) Most runners know what sub-40 means (and how fast it feels).

Were you always on schedule, or did you have to kick down to get it?

From what I've read, your training is not at full potential in a few areas, so you can do better. Maybe not 34:XX, but definitely better.

  10. Hi Scott, I am so excited to hear that you did a PB. That is excellent news.

How long have you been running for?

I have been running for over 10 years now and am still doing PB's. There are people I know who have been running for 20years and still doing pbs.

I do agree with you though that the thought crosses my mind too. When I ran Canberra last year i put so much into it that I am terrified I will never be able to better that effort.

However what we can always aim to improve on is our health (running without injury) our endurance, and our results in different events.

You may have just ran your fastest ever 10km in your life. I wont sit here and tell you that you can do better....even if I think that. However even if you never run that fast again, you will be able to run with more confidence, more consistently and more regularly without injury at that pace.

We all age and our performances drop off but the pleasure and enjoyment and physical benefits we get from running are all still there - in fact I think they increase over time. So don't go getting sad now that you have done an amazing feat with that sub 40min.

BTW how is the diet going? I am following the CSIRO Total Well Being diet (started Monday) - it is tough. For lunch - one piece of wholegrain bread with tuna!!!!! Funny enough I am not even hungry though.

    Catchya!
