They don't write like this anymore
Time for my song of the week. I've recently been listening to Joni Mitchell and I saw a recent interview were she says she's blocked and can't write songs anymore.
She puts it down to the present time which she says is "unromantic and shallow" and she calls songs on the radio today little more than jingles around which commercials fit. I can't really argue with her as I don't see much soul and romanticism in recent music. Having said that I see this beginning to change and I'm more than happy to be convinced otherwise.

After listening to that, I want a Chelsea Morning. It's sad that she can't write anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree that most of the mainstream 'top-40' songs haven't much going for them.
Present tenses aren't what they used to be.
Beautiful :-)
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with her analysis of modern music. Its kind of sad really. Sure, there's some really fantastic music out there but its a shame bands/singers have to conform just to be heard ... and to make a quid. How often do you hear people say that nothing is as good as 'their first album'.
Lately I've been finding lots of great stuff via blogs that feature indie artists. Free downloads too :-) Ha ha, no wonder I ended up the biggest loser in the annual triplej Hottest 100 comp. I had no idea!
Anyway, thanks for that one.
Joni is good. Apparently she's in a "painting" phase at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI guess with her not writing music anymore, that just leaves us saying (or singing) "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone"

I'm an old romantic at heart and have found I am not too moved by the recent stuff, so that tends to back up what you both have said.
