Yes, Japan is competitive. Not sure that there is a ranking list for Aus, but I reckon you'd be top-10 A/G. The 2:30 goal, while big and hairy, isn't unreasonable. Just read the interview with Jeannette Faber, who went from 3 hrs+ gradually down to 2:32 (not a huge amount of natural speed too - 17:36 5k when in college). Key thing will be staying uninjured so listen to your body and do the type of training that keeps you injury-free.
